BIG NEWS! Just found out I am one of 49 poets chosen for Poets United’s first Anthology! I am thrilled to be part of such an inspired group of poets. I’ll give you info when it comes out… but for now, it’s all about the good vibes! Thanks to Robert and the Poets United group for choosing my work.
Our first week in Madison, WI, and we got pounded by a blizzard. Thrilling. Brought back memories of growing up at the top of a hill in Apalachin, NY, and praying for a snow day with Kim, Vaughna and the gang!
MADISON MIDNIGHT
Full-tilt boogie of a blizzard
A whirling curtain of snow flutters in a stiff wind
Up, down, sideways, manic, tornadic
Drifts recall the dunes of San Juan
But these surfaces are not calm, nor smooth
Small patches plot courses to oblivion
A moment of calm; street lights visible across the courtyard
Suddenly, wind shouts commands
and snow obeys
The Dance of the Seven Veils, inverted;
one layer piles upon the next:
Powder
Flakes
Crystals
Tulle
Gossamer
Shards and Shivers
The wind may bellow and billow
But snow takes wing in whispered abandon

I like this “boogie of a blizzard”. 🙂 Glad you are okay with it! We had it too, and lightning and thunder in the middle of the crazy sideways snow. Pretty amazing.

Debbie, I forget where you are located, but I know plenty of folks got hit. I was praying for the homeless – Madison has good shelters, etc., and wanted to include that as well, but that’s another poem for another day. That night, I got lost in beauty, and I have so few chances for my brain to “go that way” that I wanted to embrace it fully.
Thunder snow is thrilling to me. Also hard rains. Don’t know why they don’t scare me except perhaps that I have always had some sort of roof over my head, Hence the prayer I mentioned… Peace, Amy

A different perspective from that of the evening news regarding recent weather events. I LIKE YOURS!

Yeah, had to give in to the beauty. But believe me, my prayers were with the homeless… I started to include that in the poem and decided that once in a while, it’s OK for me to not allow my worry and guilt into an otherwise peaceful image. Guess that’s a sign of growth, huh? (Of course, I will soon post an entire poem about the homeless, so that will keep me on track with my tradition of social activism…)
Thanks, Kim. Peace, Amy

I definitely liked this poem, especially the pairing of the words manic and tornadic. Brett
