TO ALL WORDPRESS FRIENDS (and anyone else whose email box has been flooded because of the “email me all comments because I have nothing better to do” box!): Well, I sent out the “glitch fix” far and wide, and I’ve received some very gracious notes of thanks from folks who were frustrated with WordPress and that “email me followup comments” box being checked. So I posted on the forums, in hopes of sharing some useful info:
“WordPressers unite! That annoying, pre-checked “Follow comments via email” box CAN BE REMOVED. Took me more than an hour but I think I fixed it.
I can make that entire box go away, so you and your followers will no longer be deluged with unwanted comments. Follow step by step and START from your “Dashboard” (drop-down menu when you hover on your blog name next to the W) and take your time.
Also, if you reblog this info, PLEASE credit my blog, because it took a lot of time and effort. I’m an activist, so working against “the machine” comes naturally, haha. Good luck! Amy Barlow Liberatore https://sharplittlepencil.com/2012/05/06/antibiotic-for-wordpress-glitch/”

THESE ARE THE TWO COMMENTS I RECEIVED. And what a load of crap! My (admittedly snotty) reply follows! Don’t you just love vendors (yes, I paid for all my upgrades) who go to the trouble of putting down bloggers who are simply trying to help? Read on:

“Are you kidding? We regular Volunteers are fully aware of how to use the settings on our blogs.”

“Hmmm. I don’t get why you’re on WP if I read your post right. Regular WP bloggers also know how to use the settings on our blogs, so I probably won’t credit that find to your blog, sharplittlepencil. But thanks for the “Captain Obvious” moment of coming to the rescue. 🙂

MY REPLY:
@ thistimethisspace: You “regular volunteers” aren’t as sharp as you seem to think you are if you didn’t know that this problem was real. HUNDREDS of subscribers are hopping mad and threatening to endure the CAPTCHA of Blogger because WordPress has been unresponsive. Sorry, you failed to impress.
@kyllingsara: “I don’t know why you’re on WP”? Are you aware that I have paid to own my domain name and also paid to upgrade my memory space? You SHOULD credit my blog, for no other reason than that annoying box is still on this page, automatically checked. You have inconvenienced hundreds of bloggers as well as their readers. Take responsibility and admit it. If you read my fix completely, you wouldn’t employ the snotty “Captain Obvious” reference. What kind of people are you that you won’t fix a simple glitch like this.
I’m a former systems coordinator, and I darned well know my way around the “belly of the beast” with every domain I use. This one took lots of time to figure out, and lots of folks have written me, thanking me for doing something WordPress couldn’t be bothered to do. I don’t believe you know as much as you think you do, and your arrogance is just plain rude. Amy Barlow Liberatore, who’s not as dumb as you seem to think.

Amy, you are a gem. I did follow your instructions, but got in a muddle. Eventually I saw the light, and have cut out the options from my own blog – restrictive in some ways- so at least my commenters are not being inundated with my spam. But I’m still having the occasional problem with other people’s blogs where I’ve forgotten to UNcheck the follow comment box because it disappeared behind the tool bar. Then I have to waste more time going to “blogs I follow” and deleting thecomment subscriptions. Blogging is becoming a bit too much of a chore, and I may take a rest for a few days in the hope that WP comes to its senses.
I love your snotty response: your WP respondent is unbelievably rude. At least mine have been semi-polite, if stupid!

See, Viv, the reason I was so snotty IS precisely because wonderful poets like you are taking days off. That’s not right. All it takes is for some dweeb in their web programming dept. to uncheck the box in THEIR system. The problem started with them; it should end there as well. Love, Amy

Well what happened to customer service at WordPress? Thanks for taking the time and trouble to let us know how to rectify this problem and thanks for taking the time to send me an email. Now if I could just stop getting the same email four and five times all would be well in my blog.
Sharp Little Pencil
Oy, Judith, so sorry you are having problems. WP had better get their act together. And if your blog is “free,” trust me – I pay for upgrades and have gotten no better service than the freebie bloggers. Peace, Amy

Yes, thanks; I’ve turned it off on my blog too, though as Viv said, for others who still haven’t, it’s still something to rectify. (For which my fix still works! wooo) But if there’s one thing we should all learn from the Interwebs, it’s that comments on public forums never lead anywhere good. Ever. 😛

You’re right, Joseph. I was pretty snotty… sometimes I forget to breathe when I kick into manic mode and get nasty. Just ask former NYS Gov. Pataki… Thanks, and glad your fix is working fine… Amy

Stand proud when you know you’re right. 🙂

Knowing you’re right and communicating it thoroughly and without as much “snark” probably would have been better, but I’m with ya, Patricia! Thanks… A

I went to your blog and saw that… hope it helps people! Can you believe they called me “Captain Obvious”? I mean, I pride myself on being obtuse, ha ha ha. Amy

Thank you for the time you put into this. I’m afraid to make any change right now as wordpress has been trying for a week to figure out why my posts won’t show up in the reader or get sent out to my followers. It really shouldn’t be so difficult. Dare I make a change to the sight they may have to start all over. They truly can be frustrating. And as for the nasty repliers. Not everyone has to be a computer whiz to be a blogger. As a matter of fact some of you computer geeks should take writing lessons. Get over yourself and be nice!

I’ve had time to consider, and while it’s true the forum meisters are volunteers and they are deluged with complaints, rather than take each complaint at a time, they need to lean on their programmers to get this glitch fixed. Thanks so much, Sandra! Amy

Thank you very much for not only giving us the fix…But also for making “public” the snotty comments…what you, myself and literally thousands of others are trying to create here in blog world is place where we can show our best sides…where the words and photos we post can hopefully make a difference in someone’s life…hence no need to take the low road…on the other hand everyone has a bad day from time to time…that is why I ALWAYS give myself 24 hours before I hit the post button…it has saved me from making a fool out of myself more than once…and I need all the help I can get.
Be encouraged!

Stephen, that’s the perfect equivalent to writing t he letter that never gets posted. You’re right, and I think I was a bit too snarky. But I’m glad I copied the forum post before it was deleted, because they were really out of line; my snottiness was in response… but still, no excuse. Like someone said, wait 24 hrs. before hitting “send.” I was feeling my oats… Peace, Amy

Saved from the bother on account of being a non WordPress guy! Thanks anyway, Amy!

Thanks for your solution, this mess was driving me crazy. I received your solution from “AllThingsBoys” when she re-blogged your post. BTW, it seems to me I recall a WP distribution of how they created this notify all as a wonderful thing for all us bloggers. They live in a dream world I guess.
Thanks again

Thanks again, Amy, for helping this follower of yours. You also helped way back when you gave me one word of guidance: “Dashboard”. Expertise of computer is not in my possession…
