We Interrupt Your Regularly Schedule Program
(a full-tilt boogie political rant)
As the prez drones on
Americans are bored.
As the drones fall on
Afghanis, they’re gored, ignored by
the drumbeat of war, the military
rhythm of their streets, their football meets,
their homes, Rumi roams their graveyards.
American values pressed upon them
like Nagasaki tattoos in hues of death
searing their flesh, a mesh of
indelible reminders that cling to
the very marrow of their own beliefs.
Skies, fly-bys, murmurs of surprise,
more stealth attacks by wealthy whackadoodles
with poodles whose pedicures cost more than
the Dewers that fuels their mules, duly noted.
I voted, but it didn’t matter, records
shattered for brazen fundraising.
TV talking heads walking through it,
praising Lindsay Lohan working the program,
no grams up her button nose; I suppose it’s
intensely interesting to the Real Housewives of
Stepford, but it IS. NOT. NEWS.
The view expressed by Fox’s best,
yelling bellicose foghorns with degrees in
anything but journalism, kernels of truth
plus one ton of pure Hereford fertilizer?
THIS. IS. NOT. NEWS.
Our rights taken from us, our voices choicely
squelched by Citizens United, dividing the
green from the lean, the rich bitch from the
working, lurking stiff upper lips standing in line
at the Union Hall, all shirking off unemployment
because there’s always a job for any slob who will
do it. Screw the indignity of the position, it’s their
mission to have purpose percolating in the mass of days,
rife with strife, but it passes for life in America.
Meanwhile, Koch-heads yacht a lot, spend and spit
on us, that’s your trickle down theory, they piss and
don’t miss as we struggle, strain to avoid their toxic rain,
strive, staying alive even if it we lose our house to the bank that
tanked playing rushing roulette with our debt. The rich
don’t create jobs, don’t create anything, moving
money around is their pursuit of happiness.
Happenstance made them rich, not effort.
THIS. IS. NEWS. The kind that should be reported,
not distorted, nor distended, deliver as intended.
Families living in cars, sitting at bars, behind bars,
that’s news. Mental health strategy a traumatic
tragedy, that’s news. Not Happy News that gives you
a toy made by a Chinese boy in a sweatshop, top of his
head covered with Communist slogans, paid in tokens.
It’s not Good News for the FUNDAlack of MENTAL
functionISTS, but it passes like gasses from blowhard
Beltway asses whose glasses were replaced by Lasik on
our dime. I’m sick and low-income? Sorry, chum,
you’re a lazy bum. What becomes of you won’t show up
on The View. Gee, you think? Don’t blink.
The new news is glitzy, blonde tanned ditzy reporters
distorting but clueless that their teleprompters spew
lies on abortions, on choice, our voice no longer heard
because “Corporations are people, my friend,” will that horse’s
end please shut up, four deferments from Nam, never heard
a bomb, cuz he was Mormonizing in France, dancing at
draft rallies all the same. Who’s to blame if he dodged it, the
logic is on his side, but don’t turn hawk if you balked
when it was your turn. Even had de Gaulle to show up at
draft rallies, tallies not in his favor, but winning’s his
favorite flavor. THIS. IS. NEWS. (reported on the BBC, not
through Corporate Corpulent American Broadcasting)
Today the news is: Gays are hated, Liberals are jaded, Latinos
berated, Treyvon wrong-shaded and Dems are Commies. Filthy Zim,
the trimmer of black population, zoned on medication, toting
a habit of hatred, a habit of meds, side effects include an itchy
trigger finger. America is for the armed, the beautiful, and
the moneyed. Honey, it’s the way things are; don’t complain
about CEO gain and golden parachutes or hoot and holler about
the borrowed dollars Bush cushioned on a credit card to wage war
on a third world country, Weaponless but we brought the Mass
Destruction. The fact is, that war never made our taxes, and no
draft left the middle class daft. Elections cost billions, one
candidate worth millions, he laid off thousands, and though he
says his corporation may be a person with a thumper of a
tickertape heartbeat… it has no heart. THIS. IS. NEWS.
Reporting live from the edge of democracy, trying damned hard
not to be pushed off the edge, this is Amy Barlow Liberatore from

Thank you, Aaron Kent, for reminding me to rant away like I used to, spitfire style and purely politically.
For Three Wd. Wednesday: Cling, Murmur, Taken. Also at my poetic tickertape access, Poets United.

You say eloquently what all thinking people think. The world is going to Hell in a bucket. A friend of mine passed on this link http://www.facebook.com/l/sAQEk6RkK/www.avaaz.org/en/justice_for_lal_bibi/
Sharp Little Pencil
Oooh, Viv, you left a link! Thanks; I love when folks do that, for their own work or for the works of others. And yes, in a handbasket, but not before we’ve had our say about things. We need more women as leaders… Amy

Let me be the first to comment here on this poem. My first reaction was to look for my jaw because it dropped onto the floor somewhere. You definitely came out with both barrels blazing on this one! I don’t even know where to begin as far as any specific thoughts. It will require multiple readings for this to completely sink in. An absolutely fantastic work!
Sharp Little Pencil
Brett, being a fellow Madisonite, you know how I feel about the Scott Walker mess, but it goes so much farther, cuts deeper. This is the kind of poetry that is released when I’m frustrated about the inability of Washington, including the man I voted for (and will again, if only to keep Willard out of the White House) to understand what we need. No war, lots of education, and bring jobs home. Amen. Thanks, hon. Amy
oldegg
This is really venting your spleen! I read it all through and agreed with most, as of course I would because I am already converted. The hard part is convincing others that something is basically wrong with our systems, our principals and our goals. How can we be stopped from being seduced by advertising, lies corruption and bribes? They have got us hooked on the need for safety, stability and someone to hate. This deserves applause but is there only one hand clapping?
Sharp Little Pencil
The one hand clapping is actually GWBush’s hand slapping his knee because he left Obama with a $3 Billion debt on the Chinese credit plan. The reason our economy imploded is because the Prez took that debt and put it where it belonged, on the books.
As to money, I’m all for campaign finance reform, but the rats already eating our cheese (Congress) would have to pass it. And they always leave loopholes, so then we get tools like Scott Walker in office, to do the bidding of his corporate masters. I dunno. But thanks! Peace, Amy
SaraV
Amy that would be an incredible rap song! My awe of your talent grows exponentially every time I read your poems. And that’s no Hereford fertilizer.
Sharp Little Pencil
Wow, Sara, thanks. This truly is a rant… but if I took it to a slam, I’d have to memorize it, and my condition is such that, well, I can’t hardly remember names at church!! But yes, you caught the rap feel, thanks! Peace, A
Jae Rose
maybe we need Lindsay and Kim and Kourtney and Brittany precisely because it isn’t news..’news’ keeps us from many truths I’m sure..although you know..and shout it loud..jae
Sharp Little Pencil
Jae, we need Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, and the breakup of corporate media! Laws changed under Bush, basically taking the anti-trust components of media ownership away. Now Murdoch, Buffet, and a few others own virtually everything in every major market. We need real journalism and not talking heads. But I think your comment is ironic and funny and well taken!! Love, A
aufzuleiden
Very interesting – and powerful – expression, Amy. I especially liked the first part of the “rant” – and really loved the line “… Rumi roams their graveyards.” – given how popular Rumi has become – it reminds me of the popularity of Christianity, without anyone seeming to notice (have noticed) the “love component” that the teachings hinge on … oops – should there have been a spoiler there? Sorry.
It’s funny, in a morbid sort of way, but when we look at the types of things that are going on in the world – in the political spectrum and through the wars that continue to be waged – it is almost as though nothing has changed since the first election of George Bush, back in 2003 (sic). If the war in Iraq hadn’t been ended it would have been impossible to tell that there had been any change of leadership at all … but, after that, one could be forgiven for confusing one administration (at war) for another.
Of course – this (current) administration doesn’t have any plans of instituting a THIRD war, against Iran – unlike the Romney Group, Inc. – and that makes a huge difference – especially if you have a vested interest in the Military Industrial Complex – so, I guess we know who THEY’LL be voting/paying for … oh! Did I say that? Sorry … 🙂
Well done, my friend –
Peter
Sharp Little Pencil
Wow, Peter, astute comment. I agree that Bush messed up, but frankly, the current prez, a Nobel Peace Prize Winner, started sending drones to Afghanistan, killing loads of civilians… but when it’s a drone, there’s no one there to count the bodies… I’m disappointed in President Obama, but there’s NO WAY in hell I’m going to vote for anyone but our prez, because Romney will privatize everything except women’s “naughty bits,” and those, he will regulate… I don’t know how, but he’ll find a way.
THe situation is a huge SNAFU, but I maintain hope that the rank and file folks will rise up and march on Washington after the inauguration, if only to say, “OK, now you don’t have to worry about re-election… GET IT DONE. Bring them home, and by the way, the largest US military base is IN Iraq, and the prez has said that if Iran strikes Afghanistan (because Israel launched weapons on Iran), we “have their backs.” We’re in for the long haul unless we end our slavish devotion to the politics of the State of Israel – let me be clear, this is NOT a vendetta against the Jewish people (I mean, my daughter’s Jewish), it’s about the decisions of the Israeli government and how they tend to take advantage of our unwavering support. Mr. Netanyahu, TAKE DOWN THE WALL! Peace, Amy

don’t ever stop writing
it’s your skin,the spin
you are in
and anything less
a passing shadow
at best
rant and rave, carve the truth
with sharp little pencil
your best weapon
to gut and fillet
real life from celluloid lies
shine the truth filled light
on the rot ,the septic mildew
that molders and spews
and holds our society fast
the people trapped
a festering vortex of lies
brought to our homes
though the air ,toxic spores
“and now a word from our sponsors”
root and bloom in unknowing ,trusting brains
young and old absorb
the pre packaged,convenient hyperbole
brains fed on distilled distortion

and this is a WOW response to Amy’s superlative poem.
Sharp Little Pencil
“real life from celluloid lies…” thank you for this, Sheila! We go back a long while now and our shared activism is evident both in poem and in your comment, a poem which I am honored you wrote. Bless you, and yes, we will keep our pencils sharpened and NEVER run out of words. Only wackadoodles run out of words… and then they reach for guns… ugh. And the three companies that fill our bodies? Screw them, I’m going to the organic farmers’ market!! Love your passion, sister. Love you. Amer

wow wow wow thats all I can say after reading it all 🙂

Maharukh, welcome to my playpen! Glad you came, and thanks for the kind words. Winging your way now… Peace, Amy

Wonder what the revolution will look like when it comes…
Sharp Little Pencil
I believe it will start with a hum of dissatisfaction and the organization of massive, peaceful protest. Then the military will get pissed and start shooting… allowing the militia whack jobs to unleash their unholy, Ted Nugent firepower and the media will blame the peaceful protesters for the anarchy. I will be blogging from a trench near the action and picking up a bullhorn to calm crowds when possible. Riley will be sketching the action, storyboarding it for a documentary. Lex will be tending to the dead and dying as a pastor and also organizing for peaceful protest… thanks for asking. Oh, and you will be in our trench!!
Danger
I thought the same thing that SaraV did; it sounds like a freestyle rap! Very staccato rhythm.
Sharp Little Pencil
Thanks, Danger. See, little WASP girls can rap too, ha ha ha. I really admire poetry slammers, how they commit so much of their hearts to memory and let it loose like verbal ammunition. Those people who run out of words, out of creativity, are the ones who resort to other types of ammo, and that’s a damned shame. Amy
lmkazmierczak
Enjoyed your list of rants. The pacing was great, the phrasing effective, the subject matter is timely♫♪
Sharp Little Pencil
Thanks for this, LMK! It was exhausting work, but I felt like I had purged a lot of emotion from the past few months, what with Scott Walker’s non-recall and all. I have so much political passion, sometimes it runs like a stream… of consciousness. I let the paper and pencil take over! Amy
Vivek
A rant worthy of Ginsberg and Gil Scott Heron. Keep ranting 🙂
Sharp Little Pencil
Vivek, that is high praise indeed. Hard to imagine being up there with those giants, and me, a former jazz singer, a gospel singer, who’s living and working out of home in Wisconsin. Thank you so much for this compliment! Amy
Lindy Lee
Not just a rant, a fine rhythmed rap, intermittently rhymed at the end & in the middle, not to mention the terse blank verse. Excellent write, my friend, you
SharpLittlePencil, you…
Sharp Little Pencil
Lindy, thanks for the comments on form. This aspect of writing poetry needs a “letting go” of the day, the whatever, to allow my mind to free itself and freely associate sounds… I appreciate this comment very much, thanks! Amy
traceykinohio
WHEW! that was some amazing writing. I nodded my head through all of it! You’re writing is amazing. And “bravo” to Sheila H., too. Keep that lil’ pencil sharp & keep on keepin’ on, my friend!
Sharp Little Pencil
Tracey, so glad you stopped by. I’m surprised at all the attention this is getting, but I suppose it strikes a cord in everyone who’s disgusted at world affairs in general. Our name is Legion! Will stop by your blog to see what you’re up to… thanks again for your heartfelt words. Peace, Amy

Very powerful voice of the silent majority rarely heard. The groundswell is not bothered by the powers that impose their values for very slim reasons. The carnage and sufferings are just news items, which is a pity. Great political twist. Great writing Amy.!
Renee Espriu
All I can say is Wow! I think you’ve said it all, my friend.
Sharp Little Pencil
Thanks, Renee. We all have to say it, and keep on saying it. Amy

sad how the press is being muzzled and told what they can report
Sharp Little Pencil
It’s because they are all owned by about 5 people in total. The Bush administration lifted restrictions on how many papers, news outlets, and TV/radio stations one person could own. “Paging Rupert Murdoch…”
Karishma
Lovely imagery 🙂 I feel your angst!
Beautifully put.
Sharp Little Pencil
Thanks, Karishma. I’m traveling over to your blog now! Amy
Dana Leah
this is amazing, very cerebral and i personally love ranty poetry every now and then! x
Sharp Little Pencil
Thanks for stopping by, Dana. And yes, I must rant once in a while, usually about politics or social justice. Good for the soul, better for the readers!! Peace, Amy

omg…you blew this thing up…i want to hear it now….way to shake the cages of our complacency witha bit of reality…and some fun word play to boot..lets get a chant going…a rally….read it loud…lets march…smiles….
Sharp Little Pencil
Brian, I’m thinking of recording this for Buddah Mosk’s virtualpoetryreading.com, because I’ve recorded quite a few there. Only not sure it’s going to be too long! So on to an open mic. Never a slam – I’m not competitive! Thanks for the encouragement, my friend. Peace, Amy
claudia
ha…now hand the mic to that lady…what a wonderful rant amy…this is poetry coming straight from the heart…raw…honest…clear…really liked it much…
Sharp Little Pencil
Thanks, Claudia. Have to drag out that bullhorn once in a while, if only to (hopefully) inspire others to action! Peace, Amy

We stopped being a civilised (human) race when money became the new God and greed became more important than love.
What a rant, what truths all through it. Well said!
Sharp Little Pencil
I really appreciate the “vote” of confidence, since you didn’t contribute from a PAC, but from your fertile mind! Peace, Amy
Rosemary Nissen-Wade (@SnakyPoet)
Whew! Right on, Amy! What a brilliant and utterly enthralling rant. I love the white-heat, and totally agree with your principles.
Sharp Little Pencil
Rosemary, bless you. When you said “White Heat,” all I could think of was Jimmy Cagney: “Top of the world, Ma!” Peace, Amy

we may be miles apart in our politics, but your words are fantastic. Excellently done rant.
Sharp Little Pencil
Mark, thank you for gracefully acknowledging our different POVs, yet appreciating the poetry on its own merits. Your comments make the blog diverse and richer, so I’m grateful, and I respectfully acknowledge your stance as well! Amy

A great monologue here, Amy. You’ve covered the waterfront. I just wish there was less to be concerned about. And things always seem to get worse….Nice job on this.

Yeah, I feel like a major buzzkill sometimes, but it stirs up within me and sometimes that little pot boils over…! Thanks, Steve, and peace, Amy

Oh my God, this is pure unfettered free brilliant spot-on Amy to the max! BRILLIANT. I would love to see you recite this to the Senate! On TV Live. Seriously.
