Gorgeous “Goldfinger” Gal: Shirley Bassey
Ah, the Bond movies!
Yes, I thought, let’s sit back and
drool over the biggest misogynist franchise
ever undertaken (overtaking box offices
worldwide, and a great date movie,
if the woman is passive: He can close his eyes
and pretend she’s Ursula Andress later.)
My “blah” goes gaga when Shirley Bassey
Herself takes the stage, clutching a mic
Her first phrase, tentative,
lacking that signature tremolo of
But as the song progressed, we
stopped staring at her stifling corset and
listened to the majestic magic spell
cast by a 76-year-old woman,
an icon in every sense of the word
(and a favorite lip-synch of
drag queens back in my day)
By the song’s crashing climax,
she nailed that note. Crushed it.
Grabbed it by the saddle horn and held onto
the bucking broncho of all classic
movie themes. She was triumphant.
In short, Adele could learn a lot from
the great, grand, gorgeous Shirley Bassey!

Honest to Pete, I was ready to be embarrassed when Shirley Bassey came onstage at the Oscars. I thought, “Oh no, another golden girl who’s appearing in casino lounges now. This is gonna be bad, friends.” Later on, my BFF John and I were texting (throughout), and we agreed: Adele (although the cutest young woman and quite bubbly) wrote a song almost as bad as her rendering of said tune onstage.
BFF and I felt like calling both Bassey and La Streisand up to say, “If you two are feeling generous, please take that nice little Brit under your golden wings. WE BEG YOU.”
And about Affleck not being nominated for Best Director: Directors make those nominations, and I think they’re simply jealous that Ben looks better than most of them.
For ABC Wednesday, Real Toads’ Open Link Monday, and dverse Open Mic Night! Peace, Amy

She was definately a power house at the Oscars. I’ve seen quite a few of the best pictures movies but have not seen Skyfall yet.

Skyfall is without a doubt, the best Bond movie of all. And Bassey the best Bond song singer! We haven’t seen the Oscars over here yet – no doubt they’ll screen them eventually.

I didn’t see the Oscars but she was my mum’s favourite singer, and used to listen to her records when I was a kid. She certainly has an amazing voice.

Loved her performance and loved that she is 76 and still singing!

I love Shirley, especially when she sings “Big Spender” and says, “I don’t pop my cork for every man I see.” 🙂

The ‘oldies’ are certainly always the best!

interesting takes on the Bond films, never put that together before, but definitely can see it now. Didn’t watch the grammy’s, love adele though. Like the conversational tone to the piece, really well written and delivered.

Ah! The girl from Cardiff, South Wales – excellent! I didn’t watch the ‘oscars’ myself – never do – but I’m not surprised Shirley gave a good performance, she always does. Nice tribute Amy.

Two of the words greatest voices and where did they come from? A little nation called Wales. I didn’t see the Oscars, so I have no idea what the performaces were like. But Shirley and Tom, even though they are both pensioners now and qualify for their free bus pass, are just as great as they ever were.
Having not seen Adele perform, I can’t comment really, but that gal is a great talent and has the potential to be one of the modern greats and her recor sales to date just confirm that.

I LOVE Adele. When I first saw Shirley Bassey onstage I caught myself saying out loud, “Come on! Bring on Adele!”, but as the song progressed I became mesmerized by her performance. She’s not my favorite voice and I don’t watch James Bond movies, but she was dazzling with her mere presence.

Shirley is amazing and Bond movies are a guilty pleasure of mine–one of the first movies my dad ever took me to (yes, Freud could have a field day with that, right?) anyway, I take them for a campy, lots of good chase scenes, fun–and roll my eyes whenever Bond is being oh-so-supposedly-debonair. Your words make me feel the crescendo in Shirley’s song. I missed the real thing–Thank you! 🙂

Barbra Streisand – here in Malaysia, girls who grew up in the 70s and 80s adore her until today. And Shirley Bassey – WOW. But I do like Adele – at the moment I think she is genuinely in love with what she does and that is important. She will grow.
On Ben Affleck – the Academy is crazy and yes, I have to agree, they are jealous.
