Are We Not Meat Puppets?
They say jump
We don’t ask why; we say, “How high?”
They say pay
We don’t question “Evil Axis”; we ante up the taxes
When did we become a numbskull nation of
Stepford meat puppets? Coughing up money to
support the Machine that pukes out bullets and drones,
that rains down death on the defenseless and our kids,
that defends “democracy” like it’s alive and well
in this incestuous hellhole of a republic that should be
called the Citizens United Shambles of Anglophiles.
Now a 200-year old experiment gone horribly wrong
reveals the abysmal truth: We were set up to fail.
Ben Franklin knew it; we blew it according to his
prediction that the predilection of the predator rich
would supplant rights of the “lesser born.”
American royalty (the Bushes, the Kochs, the WalMartons),
bred and more often inbred into simpering, faded Xeroxes
of hypocrisy, invading Congress (or buying a senator or two,
plus a Supreme, a real bargain these days)
They co-opt the middle class covertly
Privatizing public schools
(Susan B. Anthony reels in her grave)
Privatizing health care
(Big Pharma wanks the banks)
Busting unions and demonizing the rank and file
(Mother Jones rattles her bones)
Abusing immigrants
(State of Liberty or Torch Your Ass, Amigo?)
Espousing the Trickle-Down Theory
(Paul Ryan, please pass the toilet paper,
or your budget – they’re the same thing)
Citing voter fraud and discouraging minority voters
(we NEED ID because four cases were proved)
Continuing worst practices in banks
(FDR was a socialist; rich people deserve bonuses)
With help from some bastard pastors who live
in mansions, drive limos (or are driven in same),
who wouldn’t give Jesus a dime or the time of day
if they passed Him on the street (Private police
will handle homeless, and they won’t have any
Big Government oversight in how they handle it)
With help from us, the pathetic apathetic…
they strain our brains and even our mercy through
media propaganda and corporate corpulence
And we fall for it, fall into it, ground up into
walking, talking, FOX-spewing meat puppets
And as Monsanto and their ilk skip off to another
Koch Brothers cruise to the mutilated, prostituted
Caribbean, we say
Have a nice day and
Why doesn’t somebody do something about them and
Kim Kardashian is really getting fat and
Honey Boo-Boo is on, microwave some popcorn and
Wow, this (genetically engineered, dye-infused,
growth hormone-laden, e coli infected) beef is
too expensive, but fire up the grill and pass me
a cold one or two or twelve
Where is our indignation?
Is it American Idol or American Idle,
cause this sure ain’t American Idyll
NRA, FOX, ALEC: know your acronymns and
dismantle their poisonous, licentious, homophobic,
woman-hating, war-profiteering, racist, divisive
shitmongering, unconstitutional, IMMORAL machinery
By any nonviolent means necessary

So Kerry at Imaginary Garden With Real Toads wanted a rant, in remembrance of Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl.” Since this angry state of mind is so utterly foreign to me, I did my best to act like a political activist and member of the Christian Left. Hope I succeeded. (wink)
Peace, Amy
vivinfrance
Amy my darling, this kind of thing trips off your tongue or pen with such fluency and wit that it can come only from long practice! I’m with you in principle even if I didn’t understand half the references!
Altonian
Magnificent rant, Amy. Couldn’t have done better myself, although I would have included Tony Blair, the entire European parliament, Tony Blair, European Commission, Tony Blair, Greece, Cyprus, et.al. Don’t be too harsh on your fellow Americans, the disease is world-wide, and getting worse. I am beginning to really believe the conspiracy theorists who rave on about the Illuminati, and the New World Order. It is clear to me that we ordinary mortals are being ‘dumbed down’, and made ready for the slavery to come. I fear for my grandchildren – in fact everybody’s grandchildren. I yearn for the old days – they really were better.

Leigh, what about Tony Blair and Anthony “Tony” Blair and the former Prime Minister of England, ha ha ha, Coming right over for yours!!

The real problem is that we cannot trust our lawmakers anymore. (We probably only had a tiny window of opportunity when we could!) Business, financiers, politicians have not one smallest desire to improve the quality of life in their own or any other country. Lip service is paid begrudging to feed the corrupt press with good news whilst money keeps turning over for the benefit of the few and nations stumble. We have wars perpetuated to cover ineptness and we feed on rubbish in all media to drug us into insensibility. We are in trouble Amy why do so few see it?
bostonpoetry
My sentiments exactly. -Mike
Sharp Little Pencil
Thx, Mike. Amy
Snakypoet (Rosemary Nissen-Wade)
Woo-hoo, very Ginsbergian in its style and manages to be both rant and poetry (which I personally can never quite manage). Bravo!
Sharp Little Pencil
I have to get into the groove by meditating first. It’s weird to meditate on the negative, but once the volcano starts spewing lava, it just spills over onto the page… Thanks, Rosemary! Amy
Barbara Ehrentreu
Amy, this is definitely needed and it does remind me of my own political rants from the time I started writing poetry. Except it is done with so much more finesse. Excellent and I agree one hundred per cent. You’ve touched on everything that is wrong today and, yes, some of this population are “meat puppets”!
Sharp Little Pencil
If you made it back to read this reply, scroll down to Shay’s video clip, “Pete the Meat Puppet.” I love your ranting, too. We are Sisters in Shrieking! haha Amy

there is no doubt that we the people have lost our voice. Here in Australia too. But Amy from someone outside looking in can I suggest a thought that gives one possible (I’m sure theres many) answers to your question; When did we become a numbskull nation of Stepford meat puppets? And I mean this with great compassion.
When 9/11 scared the crap out of your United States. As it would have any of us. But since then it seems Fear has kept people silent so that one of your Presidents convinced your people in to believing the lies about Iraq having WMD, that strange tea party that say they are Christians???????? got a very loud voice so that we hear it all over the world and well everything you wrote.
I wonder what might heal that fear when yes more folk are using terrorisim because they know they don’t have a hope in war. I’m not saying any country is right or wrong in the way they live their ‘right’. I just think, at least looking from here The United States of America lost something good when you became scared.
As always with love and devotion to your ability to write 🙂
drpkp
A compassionate and I do believe deeply insightful rationale for what appears to be irrational and apathetic behavior. Thank you.
Sharp Little Pencil
Leesa, thanks for this. You are exACTly on point. the 9-11 tragedy put this entire nation in a state of PTSD; my two sisters disowned me because of my 9-12 global email to all friends and family asking for prayers for peace and hoping GWB would not come out with all guns blazing. They said I was not a “good American.”
I have the benefit of getting therapy and spent much time decompressing from the whole Afghanistan, pinned bin Laden down at Tora Bora, diverted everyone to chasing false WMD reports with bombs. GWB actually defended his war against Saddam Hussein’s regime by saying, (it pains me to quote this, because he was actually our president, and the stupidest man on earth), “That man tried to kill my daddy.” I mean, REALLY?
My thought was to put Saddam and Little George in a boxing ring and let them duke it out if it was that personal a vendetta. No less than GWB’s vice president, Dick Cheney, who served under Big George as Defense Sec., said in a 1993 interview that the reason Operation Desert Storm in the late 80s didn’t go farther and go after Saddam was that, “The US would have ended up in a quagmire.” Yet he was second in command (some say first) when we went ahead and attacked Iraq, which had zero defenses.
We need more women in power. Smart women, not “one of the guys” ball-busters, but energetic, sane, savvy women who know how to communicate and engage in diplomacy. So move here and I’ll vote for you!!! I love your spirit. Amy
The Laughing Housewife
Wow, Amy! Excellent rant, full of rage and outrage and, sadly, much truth.
Thanks for the heads up.
Sharp Little Pencil
You’re welcome, hon. And thanks for identifying with the rant. Hey, they asked for it, right?! Amy
The Story Reading Ape
Hope you’re feeling lots better now you’ve got that off your chest 🙂
Sharp Little Pencil
What chest? And don’t worry, I didn’t even get to fracking in this one!!! I’m afraid there is more to come…
drpkp
My dear Amer – You’ve done Ginsberg proud – A “howl-out” to you. :). Now take a breath and forget all about this “The Housewives of New Jersey” begin, I do believe, this evening!
drpkp
… I do agree with lessis and believe that the fascination with all sorts of “variety” and “reality” shows speaks to a dual need for numbing and for a sense of restored safety and security of one’s position on this spinning cerulean marble we all share. We had much work to do prior to 9-11, but the crashing of those towers, and adjacent attacks on that still too present day – at first mobilized and too-soon muted too many… opening a pathway for Fox and for all sorts of sparkly, mindless distractions along with a 24-7 news loop that desensitizes with repetition. Nevertheless – accomplished your mission with an “Amy-worthy” political rant 🙂
Sharp Little Pencil
All media, the “opiate of the masses,” in particular FOX News, scripted “reality” shows, and the Internet in most cases… like Facebook, aaargh! And I refuse to be a Twit. Ha ha. Thanks, Pearl Girl. Amer
leesis
Reblogged this on Leesis Ponders.

Highest compliment. Thanks, Leesa! Amy

Rawr!!! I knew you’d take this and run with it.
Speaking of meat puppets, this reduced me to hysterics:
Sharp Little Pencil
Shay, this is so damned funny I almost… well… you know. Laugh out loud funny. And so apropos of the poem!
eekwrite
I had the pleasure of hanging out with Allen @ The Poets House in NYC just before his passing. He was so interesting. I feel blessed that I had the chance and got his autograph too!
Sharp Little Pencil
Now, Eeeeeeeeek, that is cooooooool. Not many folks i know can make that claim.
I once met Bob Dylan but he was so “zero charisma” I could hardly believe it! Ginsberg must have been a hoot. You should write about the encounter. With overwhelming jealousy mingled with admiration (!), Amy
whimsygizmo
Wink, wink, indeed. You are a fluent, fluid frontline action girl, indeed. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Sharp Little Pencil
Neither would I. I can think of a few public officials who wish someone would duct tape my mouth… and tie my fingers together!!! Love you. A
lolamouse
I love “pathetic apathetic” and “corporate corpulence.” Brilliant! I found myself nodding and saying “Yes!” as I read your wonderful rant.
Sharp Little Pencil
Ah, Lola, would that more people were like us… thanks, hon! Amy
LaTonya
Refreshing to read something that clearly illustrates you’re aware, literate and articulate. Not that I didn’t believe as much rather, in a generation of texting they going to pee or they’re bored, I’m relieved to hear from the living and thinking.
Sharp Little Pencil
Amen, LaTonya. I’m not a twitterer. It’s a waste of energy, like an adrenalin rush people become addicted to… thanks, Amy

AMEN!
Michael (contemplativemoorings)
There’s a reason they say that money is the root of all evil…however, it is a beast that cannot be vanquished, only shackled and engaged delicately…kind of like Hannibal Lecter now that I think about it…
Sharp Little Pencil
Sadder still is the entire proverb: THE LOVE OF money is the root of all evil, which puts the onus on us, condemning greed. Money itself isn’t the evil, it’s the ways people get their hands on it, unscrupulously… Thanks, Michael.
dani
i love the way you rant, Amy! though the truth in it is terrifying. i fear what life is going to be like for my grandchildren….
Sharp Little Pencil
All our grandkids can thank the inventors of nuclear bombs, George W. Bush, and Christian Fundamentalists (plus Muslim radical Fundamentalists) for this mess, plus Big Pharma and Monsanto’s Frankenfoods, which have now accidentally fouled a crop of organic wheat by migrating…
Let’s hope they thank US for taking action.

Um..how come I don’t see your name on the linky at Toads?
Sharp Little Pencil
OMG, Shay, thanks for this. I just linked it. Blushing as I write this. You are SO GOOD for poking me! Love, A

Love you back. Amy

have a nice day, Amy! 😉
love it. no stopping!
Kay, Alberta, Canada
Oh yes! You made my rant sound like a walk in the park. My problem is the timing: if I knew then what I know now, I’d be over there in Hyde Park, London, ranting my throat raw; I’d be marching, walking, running, campaigning, and writing, writing, writing…today I can’t walk to the park 10 blocks away, and I don’t know anyone in positions of power any more. I can rant, but with my hands tied behind my back.
Your write today is a lesson in ranting, Amy. Bravo.

Sam Edge, Writer
That was a great Rant. We have all that in Canada but we also have a current Government that wants to emulate all the parts of the American Experiment that aren’t working. Ugh.
Hannah Gosselin
Amazing Amy. You ROCKED this challenge, Amy. Thank you for this. ♥
Maggie Grace
That’s a rant! Every single word of vileness toward what this nation has become versus what we all (the sane) hoped it would be. I’m marching with you, Sister ;-O Everything you said so eloquently with your passion.
margaretbednar
Where is our indignation?
Is it American Idol or American Idle,

THAT I enjoyed! For most of the rest… I’ll zip 🙂
Sherry Blue Sky
Fantastic rant………..you’ve said it all, superlatively, kiddo.
Roger Green
You’re way better than I on ranting. I tend to take mine one at a time. (The last three days, e.g.) AWESOME.
J Cosmo Newbery
As rants go, that was a top notch one. Sadly though, it all appears to be true. 😦
Ella
Amy, I can see you on a soap box doing this!
-Kay I have seen this in Hyde Park-
You did a great job blurring the rant into poetry!
Bravo
aufzuleiden
Wonderful, Amy – as usual – thank you for posting such a heartfelt expression of your feelings. It’s funny – as a follower of American politics the references resonated with me, but I found myself including “Stephen Harper” in there as well, our Canadian “leader” (barf) – if leading a nation to hell can be considered leadership.
I suddenly feel a need to write something … oh well, I’ll have to settle for working on my piece for 23 strings for now. 🙂

Yes.. Sometimes it’s a case of don’t get me started, because once we’ve started there’s no stopping, If only there was not so much fodder for discontented people to feed on. If only…
However, it must be mentioned how well you kept the poetics of this piece. I love the cleverly inter-woven internal rhymes. Many of your lines are quotable, especially:
Where is our indignation?
Is it American Idol or American Idle,
cause this sure ain’t American Idyll…
And your final line blew me away, given the ferocity of your verbal attack.
Peace, sister!!
Pamela
Amelita, not sure how I missed this, just now caught it in my inbox. You give such voice to this ever increasing problem. Thank you so much for writing this.

so you want this link to remain at dversepoets? i will fix it.
you def echo ginsberg well in this…the passion especially that we have come to expect from you amy…we need more willing to use their voices to affect change and bring to light the things often missed…..
claudia
awesome rant…politics can be a read tissue for sure…and it’s the same all around the world me thinks..def. lots of room to re-think and improve things …
Audrey Howitt
Is it American Idol or American Idle,

well you got me Amy–I am often the only one in my neck of the woods who is willing to say that Democracy is killing us–
Great rant!
johnallenrichter
Ranting is good Amy, that I can’t allow myself to read it all because it would get me started…… Stepford Meat Puppets though, very good analogy.
punnypalaver
Wow–my favorite part the variants of American Idol. . .
Björn Rudberg (brudberg)
One thing I have learned… no matter what (even if you are right) don’t agree too much *nods heads* coming from a communist Scandinavian country,,,, Your rant works really well … For the first part of your poetry I always love to cite the words from Eisenhower’s speach after loosing to JFK about the Military–industrial complex… amazing.. if one had listened more to those words…
Laura Hegfield
Wow Amy… my favorite phrase “Stepford meat puppets?” say it sister!
Mary
Sorry, Amy, rants are not my ‘cup of tea.’
Timoteo
Thank you for coining the word, “shitmongering” .(even if you didn’t) I’m sure it will prove useful to me somewhere down the line. …

Outstanding rants Amelita! You pumped it real hard! That’s true. Not so much the media at fault but we let them. In fact we encourage them to hood-wink us while forgetting they have their own agenda. In all sincerity, we respond but are taken in by their humbugs. Great take Ma’am!

Terrific voice Amy ~ We have been apathetic and indifferent, I agree with you ~ you may have ranted about the state of your country, but we are not so different from you either ~ Have a lovely week ~
Ray Sharp
Amen, Amy!
RJ Clarken
Wow! What a voice! Amy – gotta say, I think you speak for more than one generation. Just. Wow.
Kelvin S.M.
…interesting rants & oh, some really good commentaries Amy… i needed to have some more thorough assessments of all these as i’m a bit lost to some of your references… i liked the consistency of the voice you exerted here… smiles…

Gosh, I wish I would have had that inormoatifn earlier!

This prompt was right up your alley, Amy. And you can HOWL!
