Outhouses and Holes We Dig
Back in the day,
Mom and Uncle Tom
went out back in the outhouse
Puncture the earth
Dig a big hole
Set the wood frame over it
When it’s full, throw on dirt
Cover the crap
Dig a new hole
Scott Walker’s Wisconsin
operates using much the same
“Business” model
Puncture the prairie
Extract tar sands
Sell to frackers
Puncture the unions
Extract core values
Sell out labor
Puncture public schools
Extract their funding
Sell out low-income students
Puncture The Wisconsin Idea*
Extract the principles
Cripple our prized universities
Puncture our values
Extract choice and hope
Call it free enterprise
Call it Right to Work (for less)
Dig a big pit
Call it a rabbit hole
Scott the Bunny says,
Follow me down
to a world of fantasy follies
Follow me to Washington
I’ll share my vision
with the whole country
and the world
Yo, Scott, that’s not a rabbit hole
It’s where the outhouse stood

Wrote this a day before Walker’s incredibly awkward press debacle, now making headlines across the US. Roger Green sent me a link; click HERE to see the funniest response by Wisconsinites regarding the “I handled protesters, I can handle ISIS” yuckfest. Clicking HERE for dverse Open Mic!
*From Wikipedia, a reason we moved to Wisconsin was this:
The Wisconsin Idea is the policy developed in the American state of Wisconsin that fosters public universities’ contributions to the state: “to the government in the forms of serving in office, offering advice about public policy, providing information and exercising technical skill, and to the citizens in the forms of doing research directed at solving problems that are important to the state and conducting outreach activities.” A second facet of the philosophy is the effort “to ensure well-constructed legislation aimed at benefiting the greatest number of people.” During the Progressive Era, proponents of the Wisconsin Idea saw the state as “the laboratory for democracy,” resulting in legislation that served as a model for other states and the federal government. Walker proposed changing the wording (I kid you not). According to the Wisconsin Journal Sentinel:
… the governor made the UW System’s mission to “meet the state’s workforce needs.” He also proposed striking language about public service and improving the human condition, and deleting the phrase: “Basic to every purpose of the system is the search for truth.”
Since he never even graduated college (take that, GWB and your “gentleman’s C” MBA!), he seems to care nothing about the University of Wisconsin, a gem of a college system.
MEANER THAN REAGAN.
DUMBER THEN BUSH.
Now you all understand Wisconsin’s pain. Amy

first…i have dug 2-3 outhouses in my day…and put the frame in…and built the house over top as well…
ugh on the frackers…meaner than reagan dunber than bush…oh my…you are in for a doozie there…work for less…go figure…and the rich just get richer…
sharplittlepencil
Ha ha on the outhouses you have dug! Yes, we Wisconsinites who actually read books and study life are agonizing over this “ruler,” Scott Walker. He is indeed quite the clueless one, and a media darling… for the moment!
Roger Green
My mom said don’t say anything unless you have something good to say. So, Scott Walker:

I was given the same advice, to no avail…hee hee

That outhouse is a very apt metaphor for the radical conservative procedure — dig a hole, fill it with crap, move on and fill another hole with crap. Its the old Biblical license to kill the world with dominion. I thought that comment by Walker about handling thousands who hated him at home was pretty telling, too. As if he could handle being hated on a global scale for that reason. Here in Florida, we have Rick Scott — who is thinking that since he bought 2 governorships, he’s able to buy the presidency. Sheesh.
sharplittlepencil
At least Rick Scott bought his own, LOL. our Scott used money from the Koch Brothers….
Grace
The same system used over and over again, and we are left holding all the debts ~ Enjoyed the social commentary Amy ~

Thanks, Grace!

I don’t have that problem with him… he’s been able to save us our money instead of give it to those unwilling to work… of course, this home educator put her three boys through 12 years of school without a cent from the government and still ended up paying for everyone’s kids going to the public school… always two sides to the coin… I applaud Scott Walker
sharplittlepencil
I appreciate the other side of the coin. Unfortunately, I do feel it’s up to all of us to pay taxes for things from which we do not benefit. While home schooling is an option for some, it is not one for low-income and downright poor families who struggle to get food on the table by working numerous menial jobs, and so I feel public schools are the bedrock of our culture. My quibble is not with home-schoolers; it’s with those who use vouchers for private schools… I want qualified teachers who are protected by a union. Thanks for responding, and pls feel free to continue the discussion here.
Gabriella
I agree, Amy. This is what taxes are for: education, justice, transports. I never received any kind of government help but I am glad ‘my’ taxes were used for those who needed help when they did. I’d rather be maligned for being good, or even too naive, than for being mean’. The lazy poor exist but the unfortunately real poor are far more numerous.

We live in a time when we borrow not and sometimes pay later–education is the one that bothers me most!
Mary
Good to read your thoughts again, Amy; but, as you know, I will stay out of the political arena here in the poetry blogosphere….though I definitely have strong feelings on the subject at hand. I just choose other venues to discuss them, I guess. Peace to you.
sharplittlepencil
I agree, Mary, we have different approaches. We both write about our callings, each in our own way. I’m glad we appreciate each other, no matter the viewpoint!
Gabriella
From what I have heard and read, your words echo the thoughts of many.

I think the idea of a social contract is lost on most, intentionally so: it requires contemplation, rigorous examination, and a willingness to hold opposing views while participating in a logical debate. For those who applaud Walker, I say only this: if he and his kind prevail, don’t plan on having the forum of a blogosphere for much longer, in a meaningful form. To explicate this would be to hijack Amy’s thread, however… ~
sharplittlepencil
Amen and amen, Michael. It’s getting scary out there! People who don’t see the danger to NIMBY thinking are in for a surprise when it’s their turn… their back yard.

Politicians quite often can be found wallowing in their own feces. Would say your poem quite got this point across!
Björn Rudberg (brudberg)
Indeed – there are limits to what should be done in the name of a freedom that binds us to the hole of an outhouse. For me not giving education for free is pure waste of intellectual material.. But of course here all education even university comes at no tuition costs, and of course handling ISIS the way you can quench a union is laughable (and terrifying)
sharplittlepencil
Free education. How very unAmerican! Next you will be saying you have free health care… and then Scott Walker will think you are all commie socialist freeloaders! In my perfect America, we stop bombing the Middle East back to the Middle Ages and use all that money for education, health care, and taking much better care of our elders… Thanks, Bjorn. We always have each other’s backs!! Amy
zongrik
the whole thing kicked you in the ass, but wow, that ending was a debilitating kick.
in state, faithful lying
claudia
not too familar with your politics over there but sounds like it’s everywhere the same… and i do still hope that those who dig the holes get buried in them – and not the innocent..ugh
sharplittlepencil
Ah, if wishes were fishes… Scott Walker would still be slimy! Thanks for the thought…
Susan
Hahaha! If only we’d just stuck with the lowly outhouse, we would have been better off. Of course, city dwellers used gutters. But on the whole, as you describe it, they may have been better off despite the proximity..
dani
oh my, that’s bad! i didn’t know you could get dumber than Bush!
what a sad situation, Amy. i live in Arizona, home to John McCain and a long succession of idiot Republican governors. want to carry a gun into a bar? go ahead! want more funding for education? how dare you suggest such a thing!
{sigh} i don’t know how you don’t end up feeling completely hopeless. i so admire your activism! hope you are well, sweetheart.
♥

Dani, you caught the spirit of this piece because you have to use a similar outhouse (which masquerades as the state house!). Yikes, Arizona is one of those states I would not want to live in, either. I love Wisconsin and there rae many hip people here in Madison, but this numbnuts is reminding me that Sen. Joe McCarthy of 50s witchhunt fame was also a Wisconsinite. Crap is alive and well in both our states!
Snakypoet (Rosemary Nissen-Wade)
A telling analogy!

Conveys a lot with so many issues. How true!
Hope all are taken care of…
reneejohnsonwrites
Isn’t this the normal human tendency — cover it over, the cover the cover. Yikes.
sharplittlepencil
Yikes, yoiks, and zounds! Quite right.
purplepeninportland
Ya gotta the outhouse as metaphor!
