THE MAN WHO MISTOOK JESUS FOR AN A.T.M.
And he makes a good living
Preaches the Gospel of Abundance
like it’s all about actual money
Mistakes manna for mammon
Money managers for martyrs when they
lose it all in the latest crash
Dave says the poor have bad habits
Tosses Bible verses like piñata candy to the
starving, staring sycophants who pay for the privilege
Dave is so white in his chambray shirt
(Get it, he’s a blue-collar guy with
a blue-blood bank account, all cash)
But being white is a given in his world
Because Jesus was clearly a white Christian
who whispered the Holy Password to Dave
Dave can unlock the Vault for y’all
But first, like it was with the Pharisees, you have to
change your money at the temple door and
sacrifice to a False Idol in denim

Imaginary Garden With Real Toads gave us Oliver Sacks; rather, his titles serve as a jumping-off point for our poems today. YES! While I will always question the presumed wisdom of psychiatrists, there is room for a little Dr. Sacks in my world. Of course, it was The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat that caught my eye.
Dave Ramsay is a shyster who once had some very good ideas about paying down debt, but that quickly morphed into a pseudo-preaching addiction. We took a seminar, and it helped, but there was a lot of Fundie crap to ignore. And Dave himself, a blowhard of the first degree… who would not recognize White Privilege if it bit him on his Dockers.
I was going to write something along the lines of The Candidate Who Mistook Me For Someone Who Gives a Shit, but the Republicans have gotten too much ink…

Hey Amy–Jon Oliver has had a great series about these ministers that are trying to get money! They are just horrible. You’ve certainly nailed them here–thanks for joining in. Take care, k.

Thanks, hon. Yes, love John Oliver, but we have no cable, so I am hanging my hat on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Honestly, the whole US scene of politics, money, and religion is enough to make this pastor’s wife scream!! Thanks for the post, Amy

Love this. Hate when Spirituality is equated with money in anyway. If anything, they have an inverse relationship.

You are so right, Watty McWatterson! Amen and amen. It’s sick. Ironic that my husband is a pastor, but he’s a low-rent type. We don’t even have cable! I tell folks who are considering joining any place of worship to look at the lifestyle of the person (nominally) in charge. If you see Cadillacs or snakeskin boots, RUN.

We’ve seen such a kind a few decades ago. Weird religious sects professing free love. There were the Yogis and Moonies among them. The followers piling their wealth into the group. Even the Beatles were guided by one. These elements were such an influence one could even cause their followers to commit a mass suicide. Religion can easily be exploited as many have seen an emptiness in their lives and were just clamoring for salvation and grabbing whatever they could. Great write Amelita! Adore your fantastic word-craft!

Thanks, Hank. Yes, the Beatles got disillusioned fast: Witness their song, Come Together, which makes fun of that whole paradigm. This is not to discount the real gurus… and the pastors and others who are religious and do not seek fame or fortune. But the people who seem to garner the most attention are those with MEDIA and SYMMETRICAL LOOKS and WHITE MALE PERSONAS. Or is it just me? LOL. Thanks, babe. Amelita

Thanks, hon. Yes, checks are good. Ironic that Lex is a pastor, but we are the “good ones,” we don’t even have cable, LOL! Amy

Wonderful take on a terrible tribe — seems like there are evangelical hucksters who are identical in cut of cloth to those republican fundamentalist radicals braying as a pack for the Whites Only House. Preying on the selfish ache for salvation through wealth accumulation. You put this guy up on the cross he deserves. Nice job.

Hoisted by their own petard, right? That “old rugged” always gets play when those types are after money. My husband is a pastor, but we are the good kind… we live modestly.

I hate that God-wants-you-to-be-rich (so you can give lots to this church) bullcrap.

And bullcrap is just the right word for it. All nonsense, and smelly at that!

Amen sistah Amy! You know how to preach it. These guys have always made my skin crawl. Your title says it all. I think you have created a new label for these “ministers” who capitalize on human suffering–taking when they should be giving.

Was reading PEOPLE magazine in a doctor’s office. The Duggars are upset about the loss of their show because God wanted them to tell His word through the program. Scott Walker got into the race, and left it, because of God. Damn BS.

I don’t think Dave is a Christian. Jesus was a true Jewish man. He lived his life as he preached , caring, honest, brave and with a strong belief in God.
Thanks for your visit!
Have a great week!

Excellent. This is exactly how I feel too. We took Dave Ramsey’s course too, and while it had many good things to say about debt, his suffusing it with Biblical principles was where it got unctuous to me. Just another good ol’ white boy. Love Mosk

This could get me going on ‘TV Evangelists’ but I won’t go there, albeit to say that you have said something about that which is all too prevalent in our society and always a reminder that it shouldn’t be. Thank you so much!
