To My Friend, Far Away
An ocean between us
yet we are good friends
When the moon waxes full
she bays at its glowing face
as do I, and full-throated
Tears river and splash
downhill
trenching at her feet
forming ponds
Hope glimmers, but
still out of reach
The jungle of her thoughts
She must break through
Soon creamy silken signs
will meet her waking eyes
Be still, I murmur from
across the continental divide
Let it flow
Let your vulnerability
become your strength
I believe in you

Written for Ed Pilolla’s “Get Listed” prompt at Imaginary Garden With Real Toads; I think I got about 15 words in, only because his list had a certain flow. My friend will recognize herself in this poem, I hope, and draw comfort from this humble toad. Peace, Amy

Even an ocean between cannot separate good friends…friendship can cross oceans easily enough!

What a remarkable poem of a special friendship, which can remain unaltered despite the oceans between.

Oh, I so agree … I read Ed’s word list and read a poem. Your friend will be touched and honored with this gift.

Who could fail to hear this, at any distance? To know that someone has faith in us, that’s some serious fuel.

What encouraging words of hope – and these words reach with the power of a hug and an “I’ve been there too” which, in my eyes, means ever so much. “Let your vulnerability become your strength”… is stunning.

I also have a friend a continent and an ocean away, who would recognize herself if I were to write for, to, or about her. Such friendships are wonderful, and I am sure your friend loves you as you love her.

I liked this Amy–I’ve been booted off your site by stupid wordpress twice, so my original frilly comment is lost in cyberspace, but I liked it very much–simple, direct, but also not without a lyric feel to the language.
Hope this one takes!

Amy what a beautiful poem! And those words–let your vulnerability become your strength–so true, so hard to do. Thank you for the lovely comment on my blog–hugs to you!

‘The jungle of her thoughts
She must break through’ – a powerful visual. I enjoyed the use of images having to do with water throughout to connect the two friends so far apart.

I am sure she really appreciates you and others holding her hand across the oceans.
