People Talking Without Listening
Once more into the campaign crapper
They talk; we must endure
They espouse; we eschew, usually
They say why; we wonder “why not?”
They say how; we know they are lying
They say they are listening to us
They promise they will make it all better
like the US has a boo-boo, whether it’s
the economy
or climate change (if they admit that’s a thing)
or those pesky women who
insist on getting health care
or The Gays and their Agenda (like all gays have the same one)
They aren’t listening
Who can listen with
all that Hurrah and Howzitgoin Hoodoo
and sly glances in every passing window
to make sure the flop sweat
doesn’t show

Poets United wanted us to listen to “Sounds of Silence” and pick a line as a jumping-off point. This was easy, as Simon and Garfunkel’s classic is on a disc I listen to as I go to sleep… my personal answer to tinnitus buzzing all about me. Their song resonates to this day. Timeless, relevant, and a perfect record.
As for the subject, I was also inspired by another great song, their “Mrs. Robinson,” especially the line about campaigns: “Laugh about it, shout about it, when you’ve got to choose… Any way you look at it, you lose.”
I am taking a break from Facebook until after the 2016 elections. Between the climate change deniers, the not-so-veiled racists and homophobes, and the Planned Parenthood haters in my own family, it’s not worth the pain. Amy

Politics is as useless as the politicians. They will say anything that will appease the voters, the whole time knowing they will bend to the ones that line their pockets. Our system is broken. They dont represent the people. It is mind blowing that Trump is leading the Republican list right now. Its a farce on both sides. We get to vote for who they say. Oy, dont even let me get started Amy. And yeah, all the nut jobs are coming out of the wood work.

Looks like your political arena is similar to ours, but more so! Good luck Amy.

So very true….they do not listen. But in many ways I wish they WOULD keep silent! (Especially a few of them who will remain unnamed, LOL; but Amy, you would know who they are.)

Political-speak is one time for SURE when silence is golden, LOL. It is going on up here too and I am so sick of all the empty rhetoric.

The only beauty in political campaigning is that it is infinitely better than government by dictatorship. However the choice is ours and we are such a load of fools and happy to believe untruths.

They have their own thing to do prompted by their hidden agenda. Politics are for those with self interest or they will not move. When they do they move accordingly along their chosen path. We crave for their attention. They might jive with our needs but invariably once they tasted power they are likely to change directions counter to our needs. It will work along this way most times. We are left to our woes and they laugh! They might even laugh all the way to the bank! Great observation Amelita!

Yes they can’t listen so we shouldn’t either.

Right on, Amy! BTW, did you know that Julian Bond was in Binghamton on October 15, 1969? The Vietnam moratorium.

I’m with you. I’ve given up on politics. It’s a game we all lose.

I cant stand the focus being on this stuff. Headlines of people’s suffering is pushed to the back page to make room for all the “noise.”
