A Piku, according to We Write Poems, is like a haiku except for syllablic form: 3,1,4. Most folks who read my work know my disdain for writing in forms, simply because I’m so undisciplined (although an occasional shadorma, haiku, or limerick may emerge). I prefer free-wheeling, come-what-may poetry, but what the hell?
Apologies to Hammerstein, plus Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh (they did best lyrics) for the title…! Also posted at Poets United. Peace, Amy
I Won’t Piku (Don’t Ask Me)
I hate math.
Did,
and always will.
A Piku?
Huh?
A Manga sprite:
Japanese,
small,
round, smiling, pink
But instead,
yuck…
poetic form.
Don’t like forms,
so
I won’t do it.

Great fun – this made me laugh.

So glad you liked it, Matthew! I will stop by your blog as soon as I catch up… Amy

Ha, oh momma you are so silly. 🙂 I like it! I might have to try to fiddle around with this sort of form.
Sharp Little Pencil
Bee, it’s a fun form. One of the only forms I have latched onto with the exception of the occasional saucy limerick or heartfelt haiku! Love, “Mama”

Roger, o brother who doth keepest me on the straight and narrow…!!! Check your email…
Cannot believe you responded with a piku. Brilliant! Amy

Got the e-mail. Gracias.

Egualmente. That means “right back atcha.” Constructive criticism, always welcome and appreciated! Amy

Thanks so much, and thx also for the funny little homemade smiley! Mine is 8^) Amy (bifocals!)

I love it. Forms intimidate me, so I so hear you on this! Very witty!
Sharp Little Pencil
Sherry, you are so sweet. Sorry I’m late catching up with replies… Amy

Cranky yes, but filled with the spirit of rule breaking. You did a fine job, but then I am not an expert and don’t much care for forms either. Simply try them to see what happens.

Exactly why I (and so many other commentors) gave it a single try and will probably never do it again! Some of us are born to haiku – I’m more of a bratty ranter or romantic so hopelessly lost in the moment, I haven’t time to search for rhymes… or reasons! Thanks, Amy

It can be a fun challenge to come up with something interesting in a specific form…but free-wheeling is better, I say…
Sharp Little Pencil
Yeah, I’m a free verse person myself. But Piku sounded like something out of those Japanese Manga cartoon books my daughter loves so much, so I could not resist. Probably these are the first and last I’ll ever write!! Amy
Mr. Walker
Amy, I love it. I started cracking up as soon as I saw your title; got the song/lyric reference immediately. (I love the Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra versions). And yet… you did it. Fun! Thanks.

Richard, I had no doubt you and some of my other buddies would get it right away. So sad these songs don’t get played live… except at my piano bars, and my best friend John’s in Philly!

You must be a Fred Astaire fan!! Thanks, Linda. Peace, A.

Ha, you just did. This was fun, I too like free verse, I don’t really count this form, or haiku, to be forms anyway, syllables just remind us to keep it simple for the reader. A nice quick read is always good, now lets talk triolets and the such, ew, my brain almost explodes trying to keep all those rules together.
Sharp Little Pencil
I do love to write an occasional shadorma. That rhythm works for me. I’ve done one triolet and no sonnets… it’s all too complicated and I’m too undisciplined to do the required counting, etc.!
Becca Givens
I admire those who can free write on a consistent basis … hmmm, Piku?? – new genre for me … interesting examples!! Thank you for sharing!
Sharp Little Pencil
All I could think of was Pica, t he old font on typewriters! Thanks for stopping by, Becca, I’ll come over your way now. Amy
beespoetry
I made one too! Not quite as neat as yours, but I think I made it fit the Piku form.

Yours was beautiful, Bee, I checked it out. THANKS to all poets who leave me a direct link of things they want me to check out – otherwise, I go directly to your blog and sometimes miss your take on the prompt!
Love you, kiddo, Amy

Thanks so much, Margo! Probably the first and last one I’ll ever do… I’m a free-verse girl at heart! A

You sing to a lot of things, Viv. It’s a great quality you possess – one of many!
