ABC Wednesday is on (puff, puff) the letter “Y,” and even though I wrote this song a while back, thought it would be a nice addition. This one has never been recorded, or I’d give you a link, sorry!
Also posted at the poets’ collective, Poets United. Give that link a try and scan down the right sidebar for some incredible poets. And now (drumroll, please, Riley)…
I’d Say Yes (bossa nova)
We share a noontime table
There’s curry and coffee and a lump in my throat
I tell him all I’m able
But stop short at the popular vote:
‘Cause my girlfriends say, “Just tell him”
But caution tells me, “Don’t”
Now I’m nervous that the truth will come out
And twice as scared it won’t
He treats me like a sister
We have a long history of talking things out
He says he couldn’t resist her
But now that she’s left him, she’s left him in doubt
Now my instinct is to comfort
And my arms say, “Cradle him”
But I’d hate to blow a friendship
on an odd, romantic whim
He asked me once, can’t remember when
But if I had to do it over again, I’d say yes
Yes, it’s true
Yes, I am
Yes, I will
Yes, I do
It’s funny, how a friendship
can turn into love if you lower your guard
But if the love’s a secret
it’s such an unnatural state of the heart
‘Cause half of me’s talking logic
While the other’s lost her sense
And I’d hate to miss the fireworks
Straddling the fence
I said “no” once, can’t remember when
But if I had to do it over again, I’d say yes
Yes, it’s true
Yes, I am
Yes, I will
Yes, I do
He asked me once, long ago
But if he asks me in a hour or so, I’ll say yes
Yes, it’s true
Yes, I am
Yes, I will
Yes, I do

Brilliant!!! Really like that one!!! xxx
Sharp Little Pencil
Thanks so much, Alison! 😉 Amy
vivinfrance
I’d love to hear you sing this. It’s sad and wise and foolish all at once.
Sharp Little Pencil
You really nailed the character, Viv. Sad and wise and foolish. Especially because it’s a rebound: He’s just getting out of his last relationship, right? Thanks. I hope to record it someday when I get the money together! Amy
Roger Green
YES! Very real tale! Affairs of the heart are so tricky. (BTW, are you still having responding to my comments?)

L’amour, tous jour, l’amour…
Oi. (That’s the extent of my French, but YES I am responding; I’m late this week b/c of family in town, sorry!) Amy
Paula Scott Molokai Girl Studio
Love it! Brings back memories of my first crush-went much like this poem!
But, that was then and this is now and it is no more. Moved on to something better!
Sharp Little Pencil
Much better than the situation described is great. This girl would have been a rebound, right? Thanks, Paula! Amy
Buddah Moskowitz
Dug this very much – make a demo of it and upload it! – love, Moskorooni
Sharp Little Pencil
Ah, demos of music are so hard to present, because they never sound the way you want them to, plus it’s not considered “published” in the protected sense until I have the full CD. But if I ever sell enough chapbooks and CDs, etc., I will definitely be in a place to record ALL of them! Love you, Bruddah! Ameleh
Sherry Blue Sky
I love it, Amy. When I watch movies on this theme it always drives me crazy: “Just tell him!” I want to shriek. But it isnt easy. This makes a great song, I’ll bet. I hope you finally did tell him:)
Sharp Little Pencil
I say the same thing in movies. Actually, this is fictional, and she would have ended up a rebound, I think…!! Thx, Love, Amy
Meryl Jaffe
Beautiful. I blogged about “YES” too, albeit in a very different way. This was really lovely. Thank you.
Sharp Little Pencil
Thanks so much, Meryl. Hope to record it one day! Amy
isabel maria bush
cool song. loved it!
Sharp Little Pencil
THanks, Isabel! Hope to record it someday… Amy
Debbie
Amy, what a gifted singer, songwriter and poet you are! Thank you for this song!
Sharp Little Pencil
Why, thanks, Debbie! Very kind. Hope we can hear it on CD if I get fundage together! Amy
Madeleine Begun Kane
I simply had to stop by to tell you how much I enjoyed your interview at Poets United. It was fabulous!
Sharp Little Pencil
Really, it was Sherry Blue Sky’s questions, tailored to get the most out of me, which made the interview so effective. She and I developed a nice rapport in the process. This whole world of blogging is such a gift! Thanks, Madeleine! Amy
mindlovemisery
This is beautiful and sweet, awesome song!
Sharp Little Pencil
Thanks. Thought y’all deserved a little optimism now and then! A

I love this Amy! “I’d sure hate to miss the fireworks / Straddling the fence.”
Sharp Little Pencil
You know, once in a while, I would get the songwriting bug sitting at my cubicle in some crap job. That’s when I wrote this one, imagining old friends meeting for lunch…
Kim Nelson
I can hear it. I can feel it. Completely effective in conveying both message and musicality.
Sharp Little Pencil
Kim, you could actually feel it? Musically? Lovely. You are indeed a gifted reader as well as writer. Thanks, Amy
annell Livingston
Your interview at Poets United, wonderful! Glad I came, and I’ll come back.
Sharp Little Pencil
Annell, so glad to see you here! Sorry I’m behind on comments, but had family in town, plus the interview generated a LOT of traffic, thanks to Sherry Blue Sky’s wonderful questions, which were like what a baseball player would call “grapefruits’ – right over the plate, and juicy!! Amy
MiskMask
I wish you would record this as a vido so I could hear you singing! 😀 I love the lyrics. I could feel my foot tapping…
Sharp Little Pencil
Well, if I do a gig, I will, but in the meantime there is always YouTube, search “Amy Barlow Liberatore” and there is some stuff on there! Thanks, Marilyn. Amy
Alice Audrey
There’s a world of difference between an hour ago and a long time ago. Plenty of opportunities to fall in love.
Sharp Little Pencil
True. Time makes different people out of even the closest friends. Thanks for that, Alice Audrey! Amy
beespoetry
Oh wow! I would love to hear this recorded (or live!)
“I’d hate to miss the fireworks/ Straddling the fence” – such a perfect description of that thin line between friends and more.
Sharp Little Pencil
Bee, thanks so much. Hopefully, one day I will record this one. Just getting established as a poet in Madison, and that’s where my energies are at the moment… but maybe I can get another singer to record it! Lots of folks liked that particular line, too… my fave as well. Peace, Amy
Renee Espriu
I can imagine you are as gifted a singer as a song writer and these lyrics are simply catching! I, too, sing and love music but writing lyrics…well, I think I will stick to poetry and let you take the center stage on this, Amy. Love this!
Sharp Little Pencil
Lyrics are just poetry in a certain form. Give it a try and see if you can find a person who’s talented at the musical side but lacks the facility for lyrics. I’ll bet you’d be great! Thanks, Amy
Beriowne
VERY skillful handling of iambs and meters and rhymes — as well as enjoyable.
Sharp Little Pencil
Wow! I used iambs? I thought it was only “I ams.” ha ha
Thanks, Berowne. Hope to record this someday! Amy
