Sorry, poem later – first, help for ALL my WordPress buddies!
We have located where that sneaky unemployed blockhead GWB hid the comment box check that has everyone on WordPress steamed.
On your Dashboard, left column, click “Settings.”
Under “Settings” menu, click “Discussions.”
On “Discussions” page, scroll WAY, WAY down… to just above Avatars section. You’ll find some checked boxes, including “Allow: Follow Comments.”
Uncheck that box.
Nobody really follows someone else’s comments, in my experience. But clicking this means that option (if someone DOES want updates on a comment they made) will disappear. That just means if they are hungry for your feedback, they will take the time to come back to your blog. Never happened to me because when there is a juicy comment, I copy my response to a personal email to the commenter and we continue the discussion there.
Hope this helps. And, as someone says, at least we don’t have those damned illegible CAPTCHAs. COPY THIS POST OR FORWARD MY URL TO EVERYONE WHO USES WORDPRESS… that is, if you want to! Peace. I need a nap now. Love to all, Amy

Thanks for this Amy, you’re a star 🙂

Polly, I am merely a tech savvy mom. But I’m also a musician/singer, so I’ll cherish the compliment! Amy
PS the followup to my forum topic, posted and then DELETED by WordPress…!

African Red Bush Tea? Are you a fan of Alexander MacCall Smith’s Women’s Detective Society series of books? They’re always drinking Red Bush Tea.

I SO appreciate this, Amy!! I was about to “try,” and accept this new additional flow pouring into my inbox. Smiles to you!
Hannah Gosselin
“Enable sending comment replies via email” Is this the box I should uncheck? Sorry, yes, you’ll have to hold my hand! lol I suppose I could just try and see. 🙂
Mary
Done! Thank you.
Mary
Unfortunately, I think this only works on one’s own WordPress blog. I doubt it affects what you see on someone else’s blog. Thus one will still have to keep one’s eyes open. Sigh.
tigerbrite
Thanks for this Amy. I shreiked with horror when I opened my EMail account (HOW MANY HUNDRED!). I did sort it though… eventually. Interesting to know.
Sharp Little Pencil
Hey, Tiger, I hope it works for you. Take good care, Amy
El Guapo
Great instructional post.
Just sayin though, I follow the comments for every post I comment on.
Never know when an interesting conversation will break out..
Sharp Little Pencil
WOW! Really? I can hardly keep up with my own blog (as witnessed by how far behind I am replying to comments), let alone keep track of everyone else’s conversations. I do try to visit folks who comment as often as possible, though! Peace, Amy

THANK YOU!!!!

Anything for you, honey! 8^) Amy

Open one of the emails — Click on the change email settings at the bottom. This will take you to a subscription page — go to comments and delete each blog that you didn’t uncheck.
Inside the Mind of Isadora
Amer … you are a salvation. I was wandering all through my Dashboard for days trying to figure out how this e mail box mess got started. I remember there was a small box at the end of leaving comment spaces but didn’t know about the one under settings, etc. You’ve helped empty out a lot of unnecessary dreck from my box.
Gracias mi amiga …
besitos …

Izzy, wait… the drama comes in a later post!!! LOL Amy
Inside the Mind of Isadora
Trying to catch up on my e mails. I’m sure I’ll find that one. Thanks, Amer ….
Let's CUT the Crap!
Thanks so much, Amy. I’m going to reblog this. If everyone does their part, maybe everyone will be back to normal quicker.

Thanks for the info. I wondered what all the flap was about until two days ago when I started having the same problem! Thanks for saving our sanity.

Laurie, so glad you were able to get the fix, too. It was worth all the work to find out how many friends one can help, truly! Peace (and no auto-checked boxes), Amy

Are you pulling your hair out at all the follow up comments which are ending up in your email?
Sharp Little Pencil
Thanks, GoB. So glad I was able to help. This thing is going viral and yet WordPress reps were very snotty to me. Fortunately, “Snotty” is my (other) middle name, so I called them out. They proceeded to remove my post from the forum after I explained the flaws in their logic and commented that WordPress should not have done it to begin with. Peace, Amy
Gobetween
I am starting to hear more and more stories about WP not being interested in helping when it comes to technical problems.
colonialist
Thanks for the info. Havn’t got time to do it, though – I am full time on deleting follow up comments where I have been silly enough to visit and they get a few hundred a day! 🙂

My Settings don’t have an ‘Allow’ option. Only a ‘show’ one. Oh well, back to mopping up the burst dam with a sponge …
Sharp Little Pencil
Seems like everyone has slightly different settings, no idea why! Play around with it a bit and see. It might even be fun!! Amy

This is driving me frikkin nuts….. I have done as you say and the boxes have been removed from my blog, YAY, but when I want to comment on someones blog, the little bugger still appears and it’s this box that is causing the problem. Where am I going wrong
Sharp Little Pencil
You aren’t going wrong, Roly. Just share my fix link with your blogging friends. Each has to fix their own site, because WordPress has been unresponsive to our pleas to remove that check mark! Sorry, Amy
Roly
Thanks I have done so 🙂
Sharp Little Pencil
YAY! Happy ‘pressing on! Amy

Thanks, so it has been suggested, so it has been done.

I don’t have an “allow” box either. I have “enable sending comments via email” – is that it?

That sounds right. Uncheck it and see what happens! Peace, Amy

Thank you for your two comments about the follow comments problem on the forum, but if you did comment twice, they have been removed.

I found this. And I thought it was written quite fantastically. I do tend to comment on quite a few blogs. Because God knows I can’t keep any thought to myself. And my little mobile phone has been dinging off the hook. With comments. From other people. I don’t want to see THEIR comments for cryin out loud. No offense, but..I really only want to see people that comment on MY stuff. Cuz the earth does revolve around me.:) Hope this article helps you WordPressers. It helped me. 🙂
Sharp Little Pencil
Carr, so glad it helped you. Didn’t even consider the smart phone connection, YIKES! Why should we have to fix what WordPress messed up, right? Amy

You are my hero, Amy! I unchecked some boxes (hope they were the right ones–mine says “show a follow comments option”), and I’ll copy your link to my blog–is my understanding correct that EVERY ONE of us needs to do this and that we will continue to get the comments from bloggers who have Not unchecked that box? And why hasn’t WordPress fixed this, anyway? Did you ever get a non-snotty answer to that??
Sharp Little Pencil
See a later post for just how snotty they were when I told them about it, about the fix, etc. If I hadn’t already invested money in an upgrade, I would consider leaving, but truly, the WordPress blogs are the best… the people, the talent. Amy

Although like some other commenters, I don’t seem to have the box that you mention, now that I look for it.

Thank you so much for this! I was wondering when I ever checked a follow comment checkbox,..glad to have this fixed.

I cut out nearly all e-mails way back when I started my blog. it got to be too much, and that was around 9 months ago. Now, I can’t imagine. But isn’t there already a “comments I’ve made” section? I think you can follow comments on that, unless you’ve commented on an ungodly number of blogs.
Also, just below that you can check the ‘forward all responses to my comments to the FBI, so they can read them and send me only the good ones’ box.
Sharp Little Pencil
Edward, unfortunately, I’m sure the FBI, CIA, and NSA are already being forwarded my posts because of all my anti-war and pro-LGBT ally work, ha haha. And I HAVE commented on every single blogger who visits me… you’re next, MOO-HA-HAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Besides, I hardly trust the FBI to have the taste to figure out the “good ones.” I mean, look how long they had J. Edgar. You’re funny! I’m coming over to see your blog, even though I’m supposed to be getting ready for church… (wink) Amy
Edward Hotspur
The FBI does. They tell us which are the bad ones, and those are the good ones!
Sharp Little Pencil
Then how come my file is thicker than my husband’s, when he did ACTUAL community organizing?! Oh, wait, must be when I sweet talked a Secret Service agent and stalled him until Cheney’s car went by so the rest of the crowd could yell, “F*** YOU!” I didn’t even do any of the yelling. Raw deal…!
