dverse wanted poems about music. How about lyrics to an original song, WITH the music track? (smile)
A lot of you know I’m a singer/songwriter. This is a demo (no great studio quality here, just the straight voice and piano) for a long-planned but yet-to-be-financed jazz album to follow up “Jazz Baby Hits Her Stride.” Click on the track name; lyrics are below. And John, my BFF, this one’s for you!

My Cat Sure Misses You A Lot
My Cat Sure Misses You A Lot
Words and Music by Amy Barlow Liberatore © 1998
She sits on the window seat and waits for your return
She stretches lazily, ’cause she’s got time to burn
She thinks you’re running late, or maybe you forgot
But oh boy, oh boy, my cat sure misses you a lot
Remember how she’d snuggle up and commandeer your lap
And how you’d hold her tenderly when she’d settle in to nap
I’m sleeping well these days, or so I thought
But oh boy, oh boy, my cat sure misses you a lot
She’s mine and always was, but she gave her heart away
To a man who up and left one day
I’m fine, I’m over you… I only called to say
There’s someone in the house who wants you back to stay
Why don’t you come around and visit her sometime
An hour on the front porch swing would do just fine
Or maybe you miss her the way she’s missing you
Why don’t you take her home a day, or maybe two
‘Cause oh boy, oh boy, my cat sure misses you a lot
She’s mine and always was, but she gave her heart away
To a man who up and left one day
I’m fine, I’m over you – I only called to say
There’s someone in the house who wants you back to stay
Why don’t you come around and visit her sometime
An hour on the front porch swing would do just fine
Or maybe you miss her the way she’s missing you
Why don’t you take her home – and take me, too
‘Cause oh boy, oh boy, my cat sure misses you…

A bittersweet song with some exciting modulations throughout. I like the way the audio v ersion changes misses you to loves you in the last stanza.

oh wow…this is so very cool..you’re playing and singing beautiful…and so charming to project the own emotions into the cat..always a bit of safety in doing this…love it from first to last line..and off to listen for a second time…smiles

What a treat. I love hearing people sing, especially when the piece is a song. The lyrics can hint at how it should be sung, but never fully grasp exactly what the writer had intended for their lyrics unless it’s heard. Again, thanks for the treat.

Splendidly crafted. I have much enjoyed my visit.

This was excellent- the subject is the cat- but also a metaphor for longing, for missing someone- and even though the music is quite upbeat- there’s just a whisper, a tiny tiny whisper of melancholy…loved the piano, loved your voice- this was a really great and original take on the prompt – highlights exactly my point abiut the blurring of the lines between so songs and poetry. This made me think about my own cat- they’re funny creatures- mine just seems to bite me….ha ha…thanks for sharing this!

Oh boy! Oh boy! I’m sure glad I visited
here today. AND listened!
Been lately kinda under
the weather, and so I
Missed you…Missed you
missing the porch swing
and every other thing
Been such a stupid sap
Oh boy! Oh boy!
Without a cat…in my lap
PEACE, Amy! This post was a real treat.
Is the pianist, you? I’d suspect so,
since you were synchronized perfectly.
Oh Girl! Oh Girl!
Yes, you, the one
–without a curl
