Amy Barlow Liberatore… stories of lost years, wild times, mental variety, faith, and lots of jazz

After the Loss of Him

Her first impulse was primal:
to clamp her fists and pummel
God, invisible creator of Death.

A precise hit to God’s gut;
that might ease her unending,
sharpsullen sadness.

Time ticks on; faces blur
at the very edge of memory.
Only now can she kneel,

knowing there is no distance
between her and the Infinite.
Prayer is soothing and silent…

God answers in whisperings,
in the rhythm she will come to
accept as the rest of her life.

For the Sunday Whirl (see Wordle and read others HERE). This is dedicated to three women I know who lost their husbands, all too early. Peace, Amy

Bitter Silence

Five years old, small for her age
Dreads night’s flannel silence
She’s scared of flashbulbs and
cannot swallow medicine

“Let it float, like a boat,” says mother
Finally, the girl manages to
chew bitter aspirin and swallow
Her nightgown, often wet at dawn

Fragile, frail, third of three girls
Until age forty, she was able to forget
the reason for vague, haunting fears:
She was Daddy’s favorite pet

Sunday Scribblings wanted poems about silence. There is peaceful silence; then, there is the conspiracy of silence which burdens small children with undue shame and guilt.

This is reworked from an earlier poem, “Bitter Fruits.” I’m amazed at how looking back at old work, seen with fresh eyes, is able to morph into something better. This is me, my childhood, and I’m glad that therapy and psychiatry have helped me overcome many obstacles that had me stuck in that “zany girl/catatonic girl” hell. I’m still fun, but I’m in control of my mood much more now!

Three prompts, three poems.  Enjoy, Amy

FOR SENSATIONAL HAIKU WEDNESDAY (prompt: Home)

Our Big Transatlantic Move

In tropics too long…
Gazing at Autumn’s palette
we know we are home.

FOR ONE SINGLE IMPRESSION (prompt: Silence)

Silence

Deeply drowsy,
almost asleep,
I am awakened by
silence.

My silence possesses
a certain charisma.
Mood music melts my mind
in the key of D-flat.

As one’s eye might
perceive a heavy haze
on a lazy afternoon,
so I hear my silence.

Whispers, wishes.
Haunting harmonics
pitched aloft like angels, but
with a hint of humanity.

FOR POETS UNITED (prompt: Third letter of your first name. And no, my first name is not “Sharp”!)

Y Not?

Yawningly waking.
Yearning aching to make love.
Yanking off your T-shirt,
purring, giggling, yowling…

Yelling, “Yes! yes! yes!”
After all these years,
you and I are youngas our first “yowza”!
